Team Building

Team Building

Team Building is an essential part of forming a group, as it helps build relationships and allows the group to get to know each other and their strengths and weaknesses. Throughout the programme we have used many different activities and games to promote team building.

One team building activity was tower building. The big group was split into two smaller groups and these groups were tasked with designing the biggest tower out of the resources that they had. One group had newspaper and tape whilst the other had spaghetti and marshmallows. The teams had to work together and discover the best way to build their tower. When doing the challenge different roles emerged in the group with some people coming up with ideas and others building the structure.

Similarly the egg drop challenge saw the young people working as a team to design the best protection for an egg to prevent it from cracking when it was dropped from a height. Again, the group was split into two smaller groups and they both had the same resources and amount of time to design the best carrier for their eggs. The groups came up with two different designs and when they were tested one team came out as victorious and the other team was left with an eggy mess.

We have used a range of different board games to encourage team building with the young people having to work together to get the best score for their team. One game we played was Tension where you are giving a category e.g. Disney Villans and there is a list of 10 answers which you have to try and guess. Another board game was Game for Fame where the team worked together to become famous and earn money through doing tasks such as writing a poem about dog food or gargling nursery rhymes.

Scavenger hunts are a fun way of bringing people together to work as a team so we used this idea and gave it a modern twist designing a photo scavenger hunt. The group was split into smaller groups and given a list of photo challenges that they had to complete. The challenges included the group making a star shape with hands or feet, a member of the group sleeping in public and the group doing a superhero pose.

A new resource we found was Kahoot, an online software which allows you to design and run quizzes. The group really liked using Kahoot as it was a fun and interactive way to learn. We used kahoot to do a quiz about positive and negative self talk and one about laws. As the group loved it so much we also played fun quizzes such as general knowledge and even gave the group the opportunity to design their own quizzes which we then played through.
